Irina Sigitova

Submission #2 by Irina Sigitova shows a woman suspended upside down underwater and surrounded by fish; a reference to a growing interest in BDSM as an innate reaction to the anesthetizing phenomenon of materialism in society. Sigitova initiates a dialogue about the rise of radical hedonism in the modern world, where society is geared towards meeting every need, from the emotional to the physical. Such is the desire to experience absolute happiness that if one confesses to being unhappy, something must be wrong with them. Just as the need for radical hedonism grows, so too does the craving for pain. One example of this is the increasing interest in BDSM practices as a counter-reaction to the numbing effects of materialism. As pain is removed from even the most tragic experiences, such as death, and we turn to ‘pain-less’ legalized euthanasia in many countries, how do we respond to this absence of ‘feeling’?

Sigitova’s use of the human body intertwined with fish serves as both a metaphor and a provocation. The fish—symbols of abundance, consumption, and primal instinct—are juxtaposed with the vulnerability of the human form, suggesting an uncomfortable merger between pleasure, survival, and decay. The suspended body, neither alive nor dead, echoes themes of sacrifice and surrender, as if caught in the tension between indulgence and suffocation. The ropes binding the figure reinforce notions of restraint and control, pointing to the paradox of freedom found through submission.

Through this unsettling imagery, Irina Sigitova challenges the viewer to confront the contradictions of contemporary desire. The work blurs boundaries between the erotic and the grotesque, questioning whether the modern pursuit of pleasure has led to a loss of authenticity in emotional experience. By forcing the audience to engage with discomfort, Sigitova’s painting becomes a mirror for society’s struggle to rediscover meaning in a world that offers constant gratification yet profound emptiness.
